He was born in Athens in 1928. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts under S. Papaloukas and Y. Moralis (1953-58). He settled in Paris in 1967, where he lived and worked throughout the dictatorship and the first years of the regime change (metapolitefsi). Upon his return in Greece, he organized his first solo show in Athens, presenting the totality of his work (Nees Morfes gallery, 1980).
He began his career as a painter with figurative works. Soon, his compositions move towards a precise geometrical structure, approaching more and more an abstraction of a constructivist kind. However, his works maintain their painterly quality, due to the meticulously studied colour relations and the rhythmic pattern of the form. At the same time, he experiments with miscellaneous techniques and is particularly interested in new animation methods.
The major shift in his career takes place in 1983-1984, when he discovers the potential of computers in animation. Creating artistic compositions through personal computer decisively influenced the style and morphology of his oeuvre. He is one of the first Greek artists to use digital media in his art, at a time when computer graphics had not yet been sufficiently developed. He studied information technologies thoroughly and worked on designing suitable programs, with an emphasis on the aesthetic effect of the digital image. From this point of view, his role in the introduction of computer art in Greece has been groundbreaking, while he also promoted its experimental nature. His contribution was acknowledged to a limited extent, and he still maintains a low artistic profile to date.
Alongside his artistic career, he has been intensely active in the field of education as well. He taught at the Athens Technological Institute (1961-1967), animation applications at the Technological Educational Institute of Athens (TEI), and the Athens School of Fine Arts (1983-1986). He also designed digital educational programs for children in the field of archeology. He has published articles on digital image processing for the visual arts. He was a dynamic member of the ‘Art Group A’ and ‘The Group for Communication and Education in Art’.
He presented his work in a small number of solo exhibitions in Greece and France, and participated in several group exhibitions in Greece and abroad.
Died in 2022.
